from Dr. Gary Namie on behalf of the Workplace Bullying Institute and New York Healthy Workplace Advocates For us citizen lobbyists for the Workpalce Bullying Institute-Legislative Campaign, it is tough enough to find state lawmakers willing to risk their political status to introduce our anti-bullying Healthy Workplace Bill. In 2007, Mr. Bob Barra, a Republican representing the 14th Assembly District, introduced A7801. The original text was flawed and he immediately amended it to provide better protection for workers. That bill was A7801-A. At the start of the 2008 legislative year, Workplace Bullying enjoyed greater recognition than ever in the State Capitol thanks to two successive years of on-the-grounds efforts of the NY Healthy Workplace Advocates, WBI-LC-affiliated advocates. It was our hope that the Barra bill would advance through the Assembly Labor Committee. However, we learned that Assembly leadership support for an anti-bullying bill required Democratic bill sponsorship. Mr. Barra graciously relinquished his Prime Sponsorship of the Workplace Bullying bill by withdrawing A7801-A on Feb. 14, 2008 so that a new Democratic-sponsored bill, A10291, could be created on March 17, 2008. Mr. Barra truly cares more about protecting workers and the Workplace Bullying movement than partisan politics or personal ego. His generosity is unprecedented in this era of petty politicians who feign interest in anti-bullying legislation or who lack the commitment and personal integrity to take a principled stand against well-financed and organized business lobbyists eager to perpetuate abuse in the American workplace indefinitely. WBI and NYHWA salute Mr. Barra, a true friend of bullied individuals everywhere. Thanks for "getting it." Please write him to thank him for his initial bill and selfless ongoing support. A genuine public servant!
